ITAM vs ITSM

Short answer: ITAM (IT asset management) inventories hardware, software and network across the lifecycle. ITSM (IT service management) runs incidents, changes and problems for the people who use those assets. Without an inventory, the service improvises; without a service process, the inventory does not fix a failure.

Definition

ITAM and ITSM are confused because both talk about “IT management”. They ask different questions. ITAM asks what exists, where it is, what it depends on, and whether it can be maintained or retired. ITSM asks how the service is delivered when something changes or breaks: incident queues, change windows, recurring problems. A CMDB often holds both kinds of data; it does not make the two disciplines one product.

What ITAM covers

ITAM keeps the asset record: equipment, licences, network, often application relationships too. It is there so you can deploy, audit, renew and retire without depending on a spreadsheet nobody updates.

If the record is incomplete, change and incidents run blind: nobody knows what sits behind a service or what can be powered off.

What ITSM covers

ITSM is how IT delivers service to the organization: incidents, problems, changes and service agreements. It aims for consistent support aligned with what the business needs from the system.

ITSM without current configuration data describes procedures over an estate that no longer exists. A ticket queue does not replace an inventory.

Why they complement each other

Asset discovery feeds the service: if a device has not been counted, it cannot be protected or restored by procedure. Application dependencies say what else an incident touches.

ITSM uses that data to decide the change and close the incident. ITAM uses the service history for the lifecycle. Running them in silos leaves both unfinished: an inventory nobody queries and a process that invents the map.

In the Azuba model

IT Environment Visibility & Intelligence treats discovery and ITAM as capabilities distinct from observability. ITSM is not a separately published capability: it is the service process that needs a reliable record.

In IT visibility, Device42 covers discovery and ITAM; Freshworks (Freshservice) covers ITSM.

If I have ITSM, do I already have ITAM?

No. ITSM operates the service. ITAM keeps the asset record. Many ITSM tools include a CMDB; if that CMDB is not kept current, the service process works from a false map.

Does ITAM replace a CMDB?

No. ITAM emphasises the asset lifecycle. A CMDB emphasises configuration and relationships. In practice a useful inventory needs both kinds of data.
